Pergolesi's short life is set in a populous and noisy Naples. Eighteenth-century travellers would have noticed the crowds and the noise of the traffic; this effervescence was at its height during the processions for the feast of the Virgin of the Seven Sorrows. A week before Good Friday, the whole town would parade through the streets in an almost theatrical display of piety. The religious congregations that oversaw these extravagant events sang the Stabat Mater.
In his Stabat Mater, ravaged by the illness that would soon take his life at the age of 26, Pergolesi expressed the Virgin's sufferings by blending the language of the passions typical of opera with the echoes of the popular songs that accompanied his work.
The Poème Harmonique recreates this fascinating blend, combining the genius of the musician with the oral traditions that surrounded him. A unique experience!
