Domaine de Montaillant
Alexis Hudon is from Quebec. Trained as a sommelier, he arrived in France in 2014 to harvest grapes in Burgundy, as well as in the Loire Valley at Domaine des vignes du Maynes and Domaine Nicolas Reau. He then worked for a year in the restaurant business in Paris, where he met Lise and Bertrand Jousset. He worked for them on and off for three years, while following a wine and winemaking course.
For love, he moved to Bourges and launched his own wine merchant business in 2018. Three years later, he and his partner, Jérôme Loubert, set up Domaine de Montaillant (named after the largest parcel), located on the hillside of Chasnay, in the Côtes de la Charité PGI, to start making their own cuvées. The estate currently boasts 3 hectares of Chardonnay and 3 hectares of Pinot Noir, on mainly clay-limestone soil. In 2024, the estate will be certified Organic Farming. In the cellar, Alexis allows no inputs, only a minimal dose of sulphur, and works according to the lunar calendar.
The Côtes de la Charité vineyard (PGI in 2011) is located in the Nièvre department. It extends over almost 65 hectares, covering 6 communes, and currently has 12 producers.
The main grape varieties are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Gamay. Major north/south faults and the effects of erosion have created a relief characterised by steep slopes and sustained altitudes. The Jurassic sedimentary subsoil is layered with limestone and marl, ideal for the formation of clay-limestone soils.
