Festival Les Pluralies : PHEDRE!
PHEDRE!
Theatre
Friday 18th July
21h30
Espace Molière
Text: Racine and François Gremaud, with : Romain Darolles.
"My intentions are all contained in this title.
Of course, as you might guess, the play will be about Phèdre, Racine's most famous and best-performed tragedy. But although she is the main subject, she is not the real subject of this show. The real subject is hidden beneath the exclamation mark, the punctuation mark which, in Racine's time, was known as the admiration mark.
In fact, the real subject of Phèdre! is the admiration that its sole protagonist - the orator-like Romain - feels for Racine's tragedy. An admirer, by definition, regards something that seems beautiful or marvellous with astonishment mixed with pleasure.
My ambition is to share this astonishment and pleasure with the audience by simultaneously addressing, through a speaker brimming with enthusiasm, different facets of the play: Racine's unique and marvellous language, the strength of the passions he depicts better than anyone else, the mythological origins of the protagonists, etc.
In fact, in addition to my admiration for Phèdre in particular, I intend to share my love for theatre in general, this living art form that never ceases to celebrate the profound joy of being in the world.
